If you are planning to start an e-commerce business, selling on eBay can be the cheapest and fastest way to get your business off the ground. You can easily piggy-back eBay’s vast user-base to sell your products faster.

Answering your question, “How to sell on eBay,” here we have created a step-by-step guide to teach you everything about selling on eBay.

Why “THIS” guide to learn how to sell on eBay?

The truth is there are many excellent resources to learn how to sell on eBay. But, the information on most of these resources is either scattered or incomplete. So, at Ecommercebuff, we have created the most comprehensive guide to teach you how to sell on eBay.

How to sell on eBay – The Overview

  1. First, you need to decide what you are going to sell on eBay. You can sell your own products or re-sell a product from a wholesaler.
  2. Then, you have to sign up for an eBay account. This will take only a couple of minutes.
  3. Then, you have to create a listing. This is the hardest step. But, don’t worry; we will show you the tips and hacks to do things right and fast.
  4. Next, we will talk about the fees associated with selling on eBay.
  5. After that, you need to know how to do packing, printing shipping labels and how to handle shipping for the items you sold on eBay.
  6. Finally, you need to learn how to handle return and refund requests on eBay.

What can you sell on eBay?

You can sell thousands of different product types on eBay. The most popular product categories include fashion, electronics, arts and crafts, toys, and home and garden products.

But, according to eBay’s prohibited and restricted items policy, you cannot sell certain products on eBay. For example, you cannot sell Adult-only products or weed on eBay.

See The full list of eBay’s prohibited and restricted items.

Selling your own products on eBay

If you just want to make some cash by selling any unwanted stuff of yours, you can use eBay to do this. Apparently, eBay was first introduced for this purpose. But, now more than 99% of the eBay sellers are using eBay as a business channel.

Also, you can use eBay as an online sales channel for your existing business. There are so many famous brands like Nintendo and CK sell on eBay. You can do the same, and use eBay as another sales channel for your business.

Re-selling and Dropshipping on eBay

You can also re-sell (flip products) and dropship on eBay. As long as you “pre-own” the product you sell and “stay responsible” for timely delivery, you can become a retailer on eBay and make money.

When you re-sell or dropship on eBay, you have to buy a stock from a supplier, and either send items directly to your buyers (fulfill the orders) by yourself or work with your supplier to do so. But, first listing a product on eBay and then purchasing that product from another marketplace that ships the product directly to your customer is not allowed on eBay. If you do so, your eBay account will get suspended pretty soon.

When we say “you have to buy a stock” before you sell on eBay, that doesn’t mean you need to buy a stock physically. To avoid this issue, you can simply get into a contract with your supplier, and provide that documentation to eBay, to prove that you are a legitimate re-seller.

How to sell on eBay Step2:
How to create a listing on eBay

Here is everything you need to know about creating a listing eBay. This is a 13 step comprehensive guide to learn how to create a top-selling listing on eBay.

As soon as you create a business account on eBay, you can start to create a listing on eBay. eBay has different tools to create listings easily. Let us discuss the different formats of product listings and how to create a top-selling listing on eBay.

Step 1 – Before listing your products on eBay, make sure to check similar product listings

There are many advantages of researching for related products on eBay before you sell.

  1. You can select the best category for your listings.
  2. You can pick the right key-words for the titles.
  3. You can get an idea about the best-selling product description.
  4. You can determine a competitive price range for your products.
  5. You find the right products to use with “Listing with eBay Catalog” feature (if available) to import basic product information to your listing.

Step 2 – Select a listing tool to create a listing on eBay

There are different ways to create a listing on eBay.

  1. How to create a listing with eBay CatalogIf you are selling a common product, the easiest way to create a listing on eBay is via eBay catalog. eBay catalog is a community-created database with images and information. When you create a listing on eBay with catalog, all you have to do is,
    1. Click on Sell at the top of the home page.
    1. Enter the Part number, Brand, Name, GTIN, UPC, or ISBN to search for similar products on the catalog.
    1. If you can find an exact match, choose Select. If you can’t find a similar product, Create a new product and submit it to the catalog.
    1. If you found the right match, eBay will automatically populate your listing with available information.
    1. Fill in the remaining information and shipping details.
  2. How to use the Quick Listing Tool to create a listing on eBay – You can also use eBay quick listing tool as a step-by-step guide to creating a listing. It is similar to the eBay catalog. Here you can start by typing the keywords for the product that you are going to sell on eBay. Also, you can click on Customize link at the top right corner to reveal more advanced listing features like scheduling and duration for the listing.

Step 3 – Create a listing title that can sell

The title of your product listing on eBay has two jobs to do.

  1. Explaining the product to “human readers” within a second.
  2. Explaining the product to “search algorithms.”

How to create an eBay listing title to grab the attention

When you look at a listing on eBay, usually the image gets the first attention, and within a fraction of second, our eyes go to the price, title, ratings, and badges. It is always like that. And, during this quick glance through the title, it should be able to explain the product to the buyers.

Take a look at below two product listing titles:

  1. For iPhone 7 6s Plus 6 5 5S SE Case Novel Anti-gravity Phone Case Magical Anti-Gravity Nano Suction Back Cover Antigravity cases
  2. Anti-Gravity Nano Suction Case for iPhone

These are two actual listing titles that we have used for an AB test to measure the effectiveness of eBay listing titles. And, we found that the second title yields 18% more hits than the first. That makes sense. The second title is written for the actual human buyers.

If we can’t convey the idea within a second or two, human readers will lose interest and move on. That is why you need to create short and conscious titles for eBay product listings.

How to create an eBay listing title for better SEO

eBay has its own search engine called Cassini. And, Cassini uses,

  1. Title
  2. Specifics
  3. Categories
  4. Catalogs, and
  5. Photos

to rank all eBay listings based on the content. Well, there are some other ranking factors too. But, those five are the Cassini’s ranking factors for content.

So, the title is one of the most important ranking factors for eBay listings. To make your titles SEO friendly, you should,

  1. Never stuff keywords
  2. Use human readable format (we have just discussed this above)
  3. Use the keywords in the correct order

There is a neat little trick to find the right order for the eBay listing titles. Simply start searching for a similar item on Google, and note down the pre-fills. In this way, you can get the actual order of the keywords.

Step 4 – Add correct product category and Product identifiers (if applicable)

You must create your product listings on the right category. Otherwise, you will lose the chance of making sales from similar item suggestions. Also, a lot of buyers browse the categories to search for the products. So, if you do not create eBay listings in the correct category, you won’t be able to sell on eBay.

Sometimes, the buyers use product identifiers like UPC or ISBN to search for products. So, if these product identifiers are applicable to the product that you are going to sell on eBay, you can boost your chances of making a sale by adding them.

Step 5 – Add more than 8 photos per product listing

Same as the listing titles, product photos have two jobs to do.

  1. Great photos help your products to stand out from the competition.
  2. You need more photos to create an SEO friendly product listing.

You can add up to 12 photos per single eBay listing for free. Use this allowance to sell better on eBay. Make sure to upload great photos that can capture the buyer’s attention and create engagement.

Essential tips for taking photos that sell on eBay

A great photo creates engagement and offers a clear and accurate representation of the product that you are going to sell on eBay. Make sure to use large, clean, crisp and accurate images with your eBay listings. You need images with a minimum 500px for width. But, do not forget about those who search for the products on large monitors. So, plan for an at least 1600px wide images for your eBay listings.

Tips for taking photos for selling on eBay

Step 5 – Add item specifics and product description

As we have discussed earlier, eBay’s search engine Cassini uses item specifics to rank our listings on eBay. So, make sure to add the correct item specifics.

You can add your own item specifics too. If you do so, make sure to add item specifics similar to the other products in your niche. So, eBay can show and suggest your listing to the potential buyers.

When you write the product description, don’t forget to write conscious, consistent, SEO friendly descriptions with proper use of influential words to sell on eBay.

Step 6 – Auction style Vs. Fixed price selling formats on eBay

There are two selling formats on eBay.

  • In an auction-style selling format, you can choose a starting price, and interested buyers will place bids. At the end of the auction period, you can sell your product to the highest bidder.
  • In fixed price selling format, you can keep a set price for your item. So, you can have more control over the price. Also, you can choose the Easy pricing option, where eBay will automatically lower the price, auto relist your item and notify the potential buyers if it is not sold within the selling duration.

Selling on eBay with auctions

You can sell on eBay using the auction-style selling format. There you can choose the starting price, and list your auctions for 1, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days. At the end of the auction, the highest bidder can purchase the product. If it is not sold, you can relist the item.

You can also add the Buy it now price. So, the buyers can purchase your product right away. But, it will be shown until the first bid is placed. To be on the safe side, you can also set a reserve price. If the bids didn’t meet your reserved price, you don’t have to sell your item. With reserve price option, you can set your starting price low to gain interest, without having to sell your product for a low price. Buyers will see that you have a reserve price and whether that price is met or not, but they will not see the amount.

Tips for selling on eBay with auctions

  • Set a low starting price to attract more buyers
  • Use reserve price to get the price that you want for your product
  • Use easy pricing option to boost your chances of making a sale

Selling on eBay in fixed price format

If you like to have more control over the price of your product, you can go ahead and chose fixed price selling format. So, you can straightaway set the price that you want for your item. All fixed price items are set to Good ’til Cancelled duration. That means your item(s) should either sold or you have to cancel the listing manually to stop selling. And, your item will be automatically relisted every 30 days.

Also, you can add the Best offer option to invite the buyers to negotiate with you. When a buyer makes an offer, you can accept, decline, or make a counteroffer. Actually, this negotiation option can drastically increase your chances of making a sale.

Step 7 – Setting the quantity when creating a listing on eBay

This part is a bit tricky. If you use re-sell or dropship on eBay, you know that you have “unlimited supply” of products to sell. So, you might think that adding a large on-hand quantity can be the best way to go.

But, you should never add a large on-hand quantity for eBay listings. There is a reason. eBay’s search engine Cassini uses the item’s sale through rate to rank your items up in the search. Sales-through-rate is the number of items that you have sold, over the number of items that you have listed. So, if you add a large number of on-hand products and sold just one or two products, your item will get pushed down in the search. So, first, add a small quantity and keep growing.

Step 8 – Add payment options for your listing on eBay

Step 9 – Add sales taxes (if applicable) for your listing on eBay

Step 10 – Accept returns when selling on eBay

Note: whether you accept or not, under eBay’s money back guarantee, the buyer can always return the items that don’t match with the description.

Handling returns and refunds can be a headache in e-commerce. But that is a part of this business. Unlike brick and motor stores, the buyers can’t physically see and touch what they buy. So, there is always room for returns and refunds.

Sometimes the buyers can be super irrational. So, if anything goes wrong, rather than having a bad review, it is better to accept the return and refund the buyer. As we always say, it is just one simple purchase for the buyer. But it is our whole business.

We will talk about how to handle returns and refunds when selling on eBay in the next step.

Step 11 – Add shipping details for your listing on eBay

We will talk about how to handle shipping when selling on eBay in step 5.

Step 12 – Promote your eBay listing (for fixed price listings, if required)

If you feel like you need more exposure to your listings, you can pay and create a promoted listing. The best thing is you only need to pay for the promotion, only if your item is sold.

When you create a promoted listing using the quick listing tool, the trending rate will be automatically set to the average ad rate for similar products. You can adjust this rate for your preference.

The requirements to be eligible for the eBay promoted listing

  • Your listing should be in fixed price selling format.
  • You should have an “Above standard” seller rating.
  • The listing should have at least 4 images and 6 words in the title.
  • The listing should not offer “local pickup” option.

Step 13 – Preview and create your eBay listing

Click on Preview and see how your eBay listing will look like. If everything is alright, you can List item.

How to sell on eBay Step3:
What are the eBay selling fees and payments

Here is everything you need to know about eBay selling fees and Payments. When you sell on eBay, you need to pay some fees to use their services and features.

Alright, before we go any further, we need to understand how selling fees on eBay works. So, here we will quickly discuss the fees associated with selling on eBay.

eBay selling fees and payments

There are five eBay selling fees and payments that you need to consider.

Note: Below values are applicable for those who are selling on eBay.com. If you are selling on eBay.au or eBay.uk, these values can change accordingly.

  1. Insertion fee – The fee to list an item on eBay. For most of the categories, every month you will get 50 zero insertion fee listings.
If you need to create more than 50 listings per month, you have to pay $0.35 per additional listing. The eBay insertion fee can vary depending on your product category. For example, if you sell heavy equipment parts on eBay, you will need to pay $20 per listing.
If you have a “Good ‘Til Cancelled” listing, you will get automatically charged for an insertion fee every 30 days.
  2. Final value fee – A certain percentage of the sales price. Unlike the insertion fee, you only have to pay the final value fee after making a sale on eBay.
For most categories, the final value fee is 10% of the final price. The final price includes the shipping and handling charges. If the product you sell on eBay is located in the US, and if you offer cheaper shipping options (along with 1-day shipping), the cheapest shipping option will be used for the final value calculation. Otherwise, it will be calculated based on the shipping option chosen by the buyer.
If anyhow the buyer didn’t pay for your product, make sure to cancel the sale or report for an unpaid item to get final value fee refund.
  3. Additional final value fee – If you are an underperforming seller or if you violate eBay policies, you will have to pay an extra 5% of the final value fee. But, if you can stay above the standard seller performance for the US or as a top-rated seller, this charge will not be applicable for you. We will discuss how to become a top-rated seller later in another article.
  4. Fees for additional services – You can purchase other features like having a bold listing for better attention, subtitles, and gallery-plus, or services like getting eBay shipping labels. For such cases, you will be charged for the services you use.
  5. Taxes – Depending on where you live, Value Added Tax (VAT), Goods and Services Tax (GST) or a similar tax will be charged in addition to your eBay fees. Read eBay’s full tax policy.

Let us try an example: You just sold a pair of shoes on eBay for $49.99. You don’t have any zero insertion fee listings available for this month. So, you had to pay a $0.35 insertion fee. Also, you offered a standard shipping option and a $10 express shipping option. The buyer has chosen the express shipping, making the total amount of sale $59.99. Also, you have used subtitle feature for your listing, which cost you $1.50.

  • Insertion fee = $0.35
  • Final value fee = $5.99 (10% of $59.99)
  • Fee for subtitle = $1.50

So your total eBay fees will be = $7.84 (except any taxes)

How to sell on eBay Step4:
Shipping your items on eBay

Here is everything you need to know about shipping when selling on eBay. Here we will talk about how to set up the shipping options for your listings, how to calculate the shipping rates, how to estimate the delivery time, international shipping, printing labels, packing, tracking and how to handle return shipping on eBay.

How to set up the shipping options for your items

When you create a listing on eBay, you can find a section to add the shipping details. And, there you have to fill in the domestic and international shipping information, product weight, product dimensions, excluded shipping locations, and the item’s origin location.

Select the domestic shipping services and rates for eBay

Under domestic shipping, you can find a dropdown list to select one of below four options:

  • Calculated: When you choose calculated, the shipping cost varies by the location of the buyer. You can use the eBay shipping calculator to get an estimated shipping cost for a different location.
  • Flat: When you select a flat rate for shipping, you can define your own shipping rate table for different regions and areas.
  • Freight: You can select freight option for the large and bulky items over 150lbs.
  • No shipping: Local pickup options are useful for the products that are large and difficult to ship. There you can enter the Zip code of the item’s location, and the buyer can collect the item in person. When you offer local pickup, make sure to get proof of delivery (signed invoice or receipt) to protect you from any disputes.

Then, you can select your preferred shipping service(s). If you offer flat-rate shipping, you can enter the shipping costs by creating a shipping rate table. Next set your handling time (the time to hand over the item to the shipping company) and complete the product details.

How to offer international shipping for the items that you are selling on eBay

When it comes to the international shipping, you can either use eBay global shipping program (only if the item is physically located in the US) or select your own shipping services, as you did for the domestic shipping.

If you chose to use eBay’s global shipping program, all you have to do is handing over the product to their domestic shipping center. Then, they will manage the shipping and give you tracking information. The only advantage of using the eBay global shipping program is, you don’t have to handle the money back guarantee cases. And, even if anything goes wrong, you seller standards won’t get affected.

If you chose to ship by yourself, the same as for the domestic shipping, you would find two types of shipping rates.

When you use Flat-rate shipping:

  1. Select either Worldwide or Choose a custom location to specify the countries that you are selling to.
  2. Select the shipping service(s) for your listings. You can use the eBay shipping calculator to get an estimated shipping cost for different services.
  3. Enter your shipping rate.
  4. Enter your item details (package type, dimensions, and weight).
  5. You can also create a list of the countries that you don’t want to ship to.
  6. Enter your item’s location.

When you use Calculated shipping:

  1. Select either Worldwide or Choose custom location to specify the countries that you are selling to.
  2. Select the shipping service(s) for your listings. You can use the eBay shipping calculator to get an estimated shipping cost for different services.
  3. Add handling rates (if applicable).
  4. Enter your item details (package type, dimensions, and weight).
  5. You can also create a list of the countries that you don’t want ship to.
  6. Enter your item’s location.

Filling in the customs forms

Customs is a government organization, which regulates all the shipments going in and out of a country. So, when you sell on eBay and ship your items to another country, you need to fill a set of forms to declare your item to the customs.

You can get your customs declaration forms from your shipping company. For example, if you use USPS as your shipping company, you will get two forms (Green tag 2979 and White form 2976-A) depending on the service and the item value. You need to fill these forms before you print the labels on eBay. You can usually find these forms from your shipping company’s website.

Extra information – Find HS codes for your item

Even though you fill all these forms, usually the buyer pays the customs duties and other clearance fees. It is better adding this information in your listing. Add a small note in your description to state that the” import duties, taxes, and charges aren’t included in the item price or postage cost. These charges are the buyer’s responsibility.”

How to print shipping labels and packing slips for your items on eBay

You can get the shipping labels from the post office or your shipping company. Also, most of the shipping companies offer shipping label creation feature from their websites.

But, if you want to make things easy, you can also print these labels on eBay itself. When you print shipping labels on eBay, the costs of the labels are charged to your account. There are advantages of printing labels on eBay. First, it is easy to do everything in a single place. Next, for some shipping companies, you will get concessionary prices for selling on eBay.

How to print a shipping label and packing slip through on eBay?

  1. Go to the My eBay Sold.
  2. Go to your sold item and select Print shipping label.
  3. Check (and edit, if required) the Ship to or Ship from address.
  4. Enter the package details for type, weight, and dimensions.
  5. Enter the mailing date for Ship on the dropdown menu.
  6. Select your preferred shipping service.
  7. Select Purchase and print label and follow the steps shown to print your label.
  8. If you want to create and print a packing slip, select Open package slip.
  9. If your order is packed in multiple packages, you need to print labels for each package. After printing the label for the first package, select Print another label for this order from the label management page. Then, enter the package details for the next package. These new labels will be charged separately, and they will have their own tracking numbers.
  10. If you want to void a shipping label, go to the label management page, and select More actions > Void under the Actions column. Then enter the reason and a message to the buyer (optional).  Finally, select Void shipping label.

Tips for packing your sold items on eBay

  • You can choose your own packing materials or purchase eBay branded packing materials.
  • Select a box or envelop slightly larger than your item.
  • If you are packing sharp objects, cover the sharp edges with cardboard.
  • Use bubble wraps, paper, packing peanuts, etc. to cushion your item.
  • Use strong packing tape to cover the openings, seams, and edges of your package.
  • Don’t use masking tapes, cello tapes, or strings.
  • If the package has old labels, remove them or cross them out using a black marker.
  • Add the shipping labels (if printed on a regular paper, use a polythene cover).

Complete your shipping

After you have shipped the item, you need to do two things to complete your shipping process.

  • Add the tracking number (if available) – Go to the My eBay Sold, and Add tracking number under the more actions. Add the tracking number and Submit.
  • Mark the item as shipped – Go to the Selling overview, find the item and select Mark as shipped from the dropdown menu.

How to handle return shipping requests

If you are responsible for the return shipping, you have to send a shipping label to the buyer and ask them to ship the package using that label. There are two basic ways to send a shipping label for the returns.

  1. Provide your own return shipping label. You can purchase a shipping label from your preferred shipping company and send an image of that label to the buyer. To send the shipping label, Go to the Return shipping dashboard, select View return details, select the camera icon, select the label, select the carrier, and enter the tracking number.
  2. Use the eBay return shipping label. You can also send eBay shipping label to your buyer. But, if you use eBay shipping label, returns are shipped by either USPS first class or Priority mail. So, you need to take care of these costs. To send an eBay shipping label, Go to the Return shipping dashboard, select View return details, select Send an eBay shipping label.

How to sell on eBay Step5:
How to handle returns and refunds on eBay

Here is everything you need to know about managing returns and refunds on eBay. If something goes wrong or the buyer changes their mind, you might need to accept the returns and refund the buyer.

Unlike selling an item in a brick and motor store, when you sell online, there is a higher chance of getting return and refund requests. While taking necessary actions to minimize the return and refund requests (which we will talk in a minute), you also need to have a good idea about how to handle return and refund requests when selling on eBay.

What if the buyer doesn’t receive the item?

If a buyer doesn’t receive an item even after the estimated delivery date, they will raise an “item not received” request. So, you will get a message from eBay to your message box and registered email.

Once a buyer raises an” item not delivered” request, the payments for that sale will be put on hold. eBay will release your payments after resolving the issue. You got 3 business days to resolve such requests. Here are the options to resolve an “item not received” request.

  • If you have the tracking information to prove the item was delivered, Add tracking details, the courier service that you have used, and a note to the buyer. If the item were actually delivered, this information would show the date of delivery and the address it was delivered to. Also, if the item is worth more than $750, it will also show the signature of the recipient.
  • If you don’t have the tracking information, you will have to Refund the buyer (including the original shipping cost). In most cases, we use economy postage for low-cost items. So, you will not have tracking information for all the items you sell. In such cases, if you have added “accept returns and refunds” in your listing, you will have to pay a refund for items that were not delivered.
  • If the tracking information shows that the item is in transit, you can inform that to the buyer and ask for their preference for a refund or waiting a few more days for the item. But, if the item has been in transit without movement for seven days (10 for the international deliveries), you will have to pay the refund.
  • You can send a replacement item, only if the buyer agrees for that. You can Send a message to the buyer to discuss their preferences.
  • You can ask for eBay’s help to resolve such issues in the resolution center too. But, do that as a last resort. Usually, eBay resolves things in favor of the buyer (in my own experience). Also, if the eBay decides the buyer was right, this can harm your seller standards too. So, try to resolve things within these 3 days.

How to handle returns when selling on eBay

Sometimes the buyers can change their mind about the product and ask to return that to you. So, when you create a listing on eBay, you can select whether you accept the returns or not. But, also remember that if the item is damaged or faulty, the buyer is always entitled to a return.

  • If the item is damaged or faulty, you must have to accept the return request, regardless of your return policy. Sometimes the buyer might agree for a partial refund (for example, if the item has a minor defect and the buyer is ok to keep the item), replacement or an exchange.
  • If you have chosen to accept the returns, you have to accept any return requests from the buyer, even if they simply change their mind about the product. And, same as for the previous case, the buyer will ask for a return, full-refund, partial-refund, replacement, or an exchange.
  • If you have chosen not to accept the returns, you don’t have an obligation to accept the return requests, unless the item is damaged or faulty. But, if you like, you can even accept the returns too. This will help you to get better customer review. If you do so, make sure to get a good customer review in exchange.

How to accept a return request on eBay?

  1. Go to your Returns dashboard.
  2. Select Accept the return to continue.
  3. If you need to pay for the return shipping, select how you would like to arrange the return shipping.
  4. Otherwise, select your return address from the dropdown menu and confirm.

Then the buyer should send the item back within 5 business days. Once you receive the item, you need to issue a refund within two business days. If the item is in the right condition, you can issue a full refund, and if the item is not in the right condition, you can discuss for a partial refund. Read the eBay seller protection policy for more details

How to issue a full refund on eBay?

  1. Go to your Returns dashboard.
  2. Select Give a full refund to Continue.
  3. Check the refund amount, and select Refund the buyer.

How to issue a partial refund on eBay

  1. Go to your Returns dashboard.
  2. Select Offer a partial refund to Continue.
  3. Enter the refund amount, and select Send offer.

You can also send a message to the buyer with your offer. And, the buyer can choose to accept or reject your refund offer.

How to decline a return on eBay

  1. Go to your Returns dashboard.
  2. Select Decline the return to Continue.
