What is affiliate marketing?

For those who don’t know what affiliate marketing is, here is the no BS definition.

Affiliate marketing is something like this. You find someone’s product you like, promote it on your blog, and earn a commission for each sale that you make.

Simple right? Yes, it is passive, simple, and straightforward. Usually, these commissions can be anything from 3% of the sales price to thousands of dollars.

Take a look at my last month’s affiliate income for this blog.

I have three main affiliate programs (Fiverr, Shopify, and Amazon) on this blog. And, last month alone, I made $450 as commissions from just 500 unique visits a day.

You just spent one minute and $18. And, now you got everything you need to start making money from affiliate marketing. So, can you make money starting tomorrow?

Well, NO. To make money from affiliate marketing, you need people to come and visit your website. And, people come and visit your site if you have valuable content (blog posts) on your website.

Start publishing blog posts

So, how to get valuable content for people to come and read?

  1. You can write blog posts
  2. You can hire a freelancing writer

If you have money to invest in your blog, you can hire an external writer for less than $10 and get at least two posts a week for your blog in the beginning. Otherwise, you can always write blog posts by yourself. Writing blog posts is easier than you think.

When you write blog posts for affiliate marketing, I would strongly recommend you to use Grammarly to check spellings and grammar mistakes. Bad grammar and spellings can stop people from reading your posts and stop search engines from ranking your content up. Grammarly have free and premium plans. But, even the free version of Grammarly will get the job done. Simply create a free account to use their spell and grammar checker.

Promote your blog on social media

Once you got some engaging content on your blog, now you need to get people to visit your site and read your content. There are three ways to get people to visit your website.

  1. SEO traffic (Organic traffic from Google and Pinterest)
  2. Social media traffic (Organic traffic from Facebook post shares, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
  3. Paid traffic (You run ads on Google and Facebook to get traffic)

Again, if you can spend around $3 a day, I would recommend you to run Facebook ads to bring in traffic to your site in the beginning. It will be quicker and easier. However, you can also get the same results (but, slowly) by sharing your posts on Facebook for FREE. And, after a few months, you can start getting organic traffic from Google by optimizing your posts for search engines.

Some affiliate programs have a minimum traffic requirement to get approved. However, the most popular affiliate program out there is Amazon affiliates, and it is pre-approved with a condition to generate three qualifying sales in 180 days. So, you can start with that anyway,

How much traffic do you need to make $2000 a month from affiliate marketing?

The minimum monthly salary of an American is $1250. So, can you make money from affiliate marketing than doing a minimum wage job? Let’s find out.

If I extrapolate my current affiliate marketing income, I will be making $2000 a month from affiliate marketing with 2222 unique visitors per day.

So, if you have a blog with 2000+ visitors a day, you could make $2000 a month, right?

Well, that depends on the niche that your blog is in. Earlier I had a lifestyle blog, which I sold for $2500, two years ago. And, I got around 3k visits per day on that blog from Facebook shares. But, I couldn’t make at least $100 a month from affiliate marketing on that particular blog. But, on the other hand, this blog makes $450 a month with only just 500 visits a day. The secret is the niche that you are in.

Which blog niches are the best for affiliate marketing?

I have researched around 40 different affiliate marketing programs and came up with the below list.

  • Software affiliate programs pay generously to their partners. Mostly the web hosting services are most lucrative as they pay up to 30% commissions in their affiliate programs. I promote Shopify in this blog, and they offer the first two month’s subscription fee as an affiliate payment, which is $58 minimum.
  • Financial services also offer some attractive affiliate payments, which can be anywhere from $1 to $5000 per sale. Check the companies that provide loans, for example.
  • Travel affiliate marketing programs, such as flight tickets, accommodation, and car rental services, offer an average of 10% commission for their affiliate marketing partners.
  • Ecommerce affiliate marketing programs pay somewhat lower rates than the other services. For example, Amazon now offers an average of 3% of their sales prices for promoting and generating sales from your blog. However, if your blog has a larger audience, for a targeted niche, then you can make a living only on the Amazon affiliate marketing program.
  • Fitness and Nutra niche is also a rapidly growing affiliate niche thanks to their generous payouts. They offer around 30% of the commissions for generating sales from your blog.

It can take some time for you to make money from affiliate marketing

The key to making money from affiliate marketing is the blog traffic. And it takes time to create content for your blog and to generate traffic for your website. Even though now I make $450 a month, doing nothing for this blog, it took me nearly 12 months to make it happen.

So, if you start a blog to make money from affiliate marketing, do not think that you will start making money the next day. Give it some time, and do not give up. You must have to work for your blog until it starts working for you. And, it will take time, which is worth waiting for.

Rather than worrying about how much you can make from affiliate marketing, worry about how to create fantastic blog posts and how to get traffic for your site. Once you start getting traffic, you will start making money from affiliate marketing without any effort.
